Frederik Braun: Auf jeden Fall. Wir haben rund 18.000 Menschen hineingelassen.Na da werden sich doch bestimmt lauter Leute reingeschmuggelt haben, die sich doch den Eintritt hätten leisten können!1!!
Wir hatten letztes Jahr im Januar genauso viel zahlende Gäste wie dieses Jahr. Das gibt mir das Gefühl, dass alle ehrlich waren. Und: Wir verzeichnen Pro-Kopf-Umsätze. Das heißt, wir wissen, wie viel jeder Kunde im Durchschnitt im Bistro ausgegeben und Merchandising gekauft hat. Und rechnet man diese 18.000 raus,Ja wie jetzt, sind die gar nicht verarscht worden?
Gerrit Braun: kommt man auf ein ganz trauriges Ergebnis.
Frederik Braun: Es ist nämlich die gleiche Zahl wie sonst. Was heißt, obwohl diese 18.000 Menschen keinen Eintritt zahlen mussten, hatten die meisten nicht mal das Geld, ihren Kindern eine Cola zu kaufen.
Im Gegenteil, wir haben Märchen da unten erlebt. Weinende Kinder, weinende Eltern. Ein Sohn hatte sich zu Weihnachten als einziges gewünscht, ins Miniatur-Wunderland zu gehen - und die Eltern konnten es sich nicht leisten, ihm diesen Wunsch zu erfüllen. Und jetzt standen sie da und beide Eltern haben geheult. Mir stiegen auch die Tränen in die Augen.Eine schöne Weihnachtsgeschichte!

Fashion Illustrations Use Colorful Foods
Artist Gretchen Röehrs composes ingenious fashion illustrations by models’ silhouette’s and couture garments with colorful food items. The foods are manipulated by placing them carefully, slicing them, or molding them into place to follow the pattern of fabric and figures. The variety of textures are seen in the twisted banana, the layers artichoke, and deeply colorful foods ranging from leafy greens to a vibrant fuchsia.
You heard us, the semicolon, this small tattoo gained popularity in recent years, but unlike other random or mysterious trends that pop up, this one has a serious meaning behind it
The Semicolon project was created from a social media movement in 2013, they are described as a ” movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. Project Semicolon exists to encourage love and inspire”
OK, that cool. But why a semicolon?
” A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life. ”
Originally this was only one day where people were encouraged to draw a semicolon on their bodies and photograph it, but it grew from there and became much bigger and permanent. Today, people from all over the world are tattooing this mark as a reminder of their struggle, victory, and survival.
The Semicolon Tattoo Project which is an organization that was inspired by the semicolon movement is trying to reduce the stigma around mental illness. In 2012 over 43 million Americans dealt with a mental illness. It’s really not that uncommon yet because of the stigma around it many people don’t talk about it and that’s the barrier to getting help.
” The tattoo is a conversation starter ” Jenn from the project explains, ” People ask what it is and we get to tell them the purpose. I think if you see someone’s tattoo that you’re interested in, that’s fair game to start a conversation with someone you don’t know, it provides a great opportunity to talk. Tattoos are interesting, marks we put on our bodies that are important to us ”
Last year The Semicolon Tattoo Project held an event with several tattoo shops where people could get the semicolon tattoo for a flat fee. That money was a fundraiser for the crisis center and over 400 people did the semicolon tattoo in one day.
So next time you see this small punctuation tattoo, remember this story, and have a clue
As some of you may know, we’ve been operating with the help of business angels for the last eight years, but this situation has now come to a (quite foreseeable) end. However, we’ve struck a deal for the coming year with our awesome hosting partner that allows us to … well. not pay hosting, and instead work on Soup.
And the first thing we’re gonna do is generate some revenue. We tried it for a bit by placing ads, but feedback was basically “please let us try and give you money first” - well, here we are :) asking you for money. Not to pay hosting (that’s taken care of for the next 12 months) or acquire hardware (we’re kinda sorta OK on that end), but to actually continue developing Soup further.
There are a lot of nice and very capable people that have offered to work on Soup, but without a minimal amount of compensation this would basically be slave labour. Well intentioned slave labour, but still.
So, give us money, it will go to minimum-wage code heroes, designers and maybe some merchandise (depending on how many of you splurge on the infinity package).
What we are planning on doing with your money:
- Improve the bookmarklet and fix displaying iframes on /friends and /everyone (already in progress with the money @testkitchen users spent - thanks!)
- Improve speed
- Better blog customization
- More imports (bring youtube back)
- Maybe a twitter export?
- Mobile reader
What we’re not planning on doing with your money:
- Ads - this is budgeted separately and has basically been paid for (a last act of good will from the investors). But the less effort we have to put into ads because you guys shower us with money, the more we can put those resources back to user oriented improvements. Also, the development cycle will profit from not having to think of everything in terms of "will this be good for ads".
Oh, and if you always wanted to work on Soup, feel like you don’t need to make a living out of it, maybe are interested in a bit of equity (long term vesting scheme), are interested in thinking about great solutions for an incredible user base, are not afraid of re-factoring old and crummy design patterns into future-proof and scalable modules, and have a solid (or at least aspiring) background in one or more of: Java/Coffeescript, RoR, twisted python, SQL, caching patterns, design, UI/UX engineering, work queues, HTML5, … then let us know via email@example.com or join us in #soupio on irc.freenode.net (someone is hogging #soup.io…).
